Hygiene and prevention
What is professional dental hygiene?
The duration and number of professional hygiene sessions varies according to the situation of each patient, depending on the quality of tartar present or the depth of periodontal pockets; on average a professional hygiene session is recommended at least every 6 months. However, it is the dental hygienist who, on the basis of an accurate clinical assessment, will advise the patient on treatment methods and periodic visits.

The dental hygienist is a professional who, cooperating with the dentist, contributes to the well-being and maintenance of oral health.
He performs periodic dental hygiene treatments and promotes the most suitable preventive behaviours necessary to maintain or restore the health of the patient’s oral cavity in optimal conditions.
The dental hygienist is the ideal bridge between preventive and therapeutic dentistry and works with all sections of the population, in paediatric, adult and geriatric age groups and in all clinical conditions.
The patient’s education pathw starts from his own motivation in oral hygiene to the maintenance of complex prosthetic implant rehabilitation.
What is periodontology?
Treatment of periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis) is aimed at preventing these problems from worsening and preventing them from causing tooth loss.
If you notice excessive bleeding or gum recession while brushing your teeth, you may already have a periodontal problem. Some problems do not go away on their own, which is why it is advisable to act early to avoid tooth loss.
How to prevent it?
In Italy, more than 60% of the adult population is affected by periodontitis!
Prevention and early diagnosis are the only ways to avoid worsening and consequent tooth loss.
The mouth is the mirror of the body
According to the WHO report*, diseases such as periodontitis are closely linked to systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
*World Health Organisation (2002)
When dealing with a patient who suffers from periodontitis, we always recommend specific investigations, because periodontal disease influences the control and progression of diabetes by favouring the elevation of blood sugar.
This is because periodontal disease influences the control and progression of diabetes by favouring the elevation of blood sugar; in serious cases it can also contribute to its development, because it worsens blood sugar control.
In the presence of periodontitis, the real danger is represented by the numerous bacteria present in the oral cavity which, through the circulation, can reach numerous organs, triggering dangerous inflammatory reactions.
To avoid developing complications, it is always a good idea to ask a specialist for a thorough evaluation.
